When I discovered what I could express and feel when working with dye, water, and fabric—everything clicked into place. I realized I had been searching for this medium my entire life.
My silk velvet wrapped canvases have become my favorite means of expression. I love the element of surprise that awaits me with each piece, and I’m inspired by how differently things end from where I began when guiding and shaping them. It’s the uncontrollable nature of working with water that is so magical. I am the maker, but also part observer to the creation itself. I watch as pieces change and morph beyond my control and in ways I could’ve never imagined. The very active process of acceptance and surrender to the unknown is what I’m so in love with. I want to share the deep joy of witnessing the end result of this process.
The white deadstock silk velvet I begin with to make my wrapped canvases is representative of my love for using what we already have around us. I love the way the textural height of the velvet captures shifts in light and how this allows for a more expansive interaction with each piece. Throughout the day as light shifts, the moods of the pieces change and reveal their beauty, especially coming alive as light dances across the surface and reflects back at you.
I’ve loved experiencing a calming moment at the end of the day, as in the light of a nearby lamp, this reflecting and dancing creates an iridescent, subtle, captivating glow. And the softness of the velvet brings an alluring comfort and familiar warmth. It extends these pieces into a three dimensional space, and I hope it will be a joy to have them in your sacred space of home.
